Stop The Bleed
Stop The Bleed is a national campaign that aims to make bleeding control training as commonplace as CPR training. Since a person can bleed out and die in as little as three minutes it is literally a matter of life or death that someone take action immediately, someone who is already there. Remember, until help arrives, YOU are the help.

The Stop The Bleed program grew out of the Hartford Consensus, a committee convened by the American College of Surgeons a few months after the tragic active shooter incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.
The committee was comprised of representatives from the medical community, the federal government, the National Security Council, the U.S. military, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and emergency medical response organizations. The goal was to create a national policy to enhance survivability from active shooter and intentional mass casualty events.
The Hartford Consensus recommended turning bystanders into immediate responders at the scene of wounding before first responders arrive, by teaching them how to control bleeding by packing wounds, applying pressure, and using modern Combat Applications Tourniquets.
The Department of Homeland Security and the White House endorsed Stop The Bleed in October 2015.
Cypress Creek EMS had already been teaching bleeding control techniques to police officers and fire fighters so that whoever arrives at a scene first could take action. Teaching the public as “immediate responders” was the next logical step.
Since 2015, CCEMS has trained thousands of people including school district personnel, citizens, and new Stop The Bleed instructors to help spread the message across the Greater Houston Area. We continue to teach police officers and fire fighters and it has been part of our EMS protocols for years.
Nationwide here are the results for Stop The Bleed through December of 2018 according to www.bleedingcontrol.org
- More than 60,000 instructors
- In 100 countries and ALL 50 states
- More than 1,000,000 people trained
May is National Stop The Bleed Month, when agencies across the nation like CCEMS train as many people as possible. Periodically, through the year CCEMS offers free public Stop The Bleed Classes.
